Night Out in the City

Some nights are just better expressed in a photograph.

Reminisce

Speaking to my old friend, brings back great memories.

1208..
How I miss you so.

Last Sunday

8 Jan

I’m sitting in the little hidden garden amongst the concrete jungle just thinking.

IMG_0833

I don’t know any other way to really explain my mood for the last couple weeks, other than…thinking.

Not particularly sad nor happy, just wondering, contemplating, and curious to see what is in store for the future.

Life has been quite busy as I have been somewhat of a tour guide since the 26th of December, but it has been exceptionally nice to have my family around.

Around during the holidays, and for the start of the year 2012.
It’s hard to believe that this will actually my first post of 2012. Eight days in. Eight days late to some, but for me it’s just right.
So rather than have a post recapping my “2011 Experiences” or “The Things I Have Learned from 2011”. I will be posting a slight recap on my exciting start to 2012.

As the first day of January came around, my little sister and I walked into my apartment early that morning, only to find my mom awake waiting for us.
We looked at the clock only to realize it was a bit past 8 AM.
It was a shock, yet in Bangkok, you never know where the night will take you.

So we decided to get a good *nights* (day’s) rest before we were headed to the north of Thailand.

Before we knew it, we were on the bus headed to the city of Chang Mai.
As I put in my iPod, and closed my eyes, I found myself awoken in the new city we were to be spending our new year at.

Why not start off your year with a bang? So we decided to do a little something that was out of the norm.
First stop.

Tiger Kingdom.

IMG_0414

IMG_0421

This took my mom’s nickname of “Kimmy Kat” to a whole new level.

IMG_0419

IMG_0427

And just incase you were wondering if these were real or not, here’s a little proof that these are the real deal.

IMG_0446

After a day with Tigers, we needed some food.

IMG_0461

As we returned to our “hotel” I heard the sounds of a guitar riffs and sticks sticking a snare.
As I listened closer it was a familiar tune.
“Conformably Numb- Pink Floyd”
One of my all time favorites. So I decided to bid my family adieu and enjoy some music.

After a day of traveling, and a couple of weeks of playing tour guide, I decided to spend my night alone. Just a Chang, and two musicians to keep me company.

IMG_0469

IMG_0472

We had a day full of activities lined up. So before I knew it, I found myself waking up and off into another tour bus.

As we got off the bus, we transferred onto a different sort of transportation.

IMG_0533

IMG_0499

Unfortunately I was the only one with a camera, so this was the closest I could get to a picture of myself, riding an elephant.
For that I am sorry, but I hope this will do.

IMG_0508

IMG_0522

IMG_0530

IMG_0538

After the ride we gathered around my beast of an elephant and stroke a couple poses with him.

IMG_0548

There defiantly was no question what sex the elephant was.

IMG_0549

Being the caveman I am, I had to see how tough the elephant really was.

IMG_0559

IMG_0563

We ventured into a village where I was attacked by little girls selling bracelets.
Couldn’t help but snap a shot of this little girl who looked just like one of my little Japanese cousins.

IMG_0573

IMG_0575

IMG_0587

IMG_0593

We saw waterfall after waterfall.
Beautiful to say the least.

We visited another village, and had to try on some of the “native” clothing.

IMG_0673

This woman caught my eye.

IMG_0689

Burmese-Thai. A woman of the mountains.
You can see the wisdom in her eyes.
These are the type of people I can only wish I could speak to.

IMG_0692

IMG_0694

IMG_0701

After these many hikes, we all were happy to hear lunch was being served.

IMG_0705

We went to the highest peak in Thailand.
Although much colder than I am used to, it felt like a breath of fresh air.

IMG_0708

IMG_0712

Up in the high country I feel alive. surrounded by trees. The crisp air in your face. The  fresh air all around me.
It reminded me of days in my past. When I would spend afternoons up in the mountains. Just thinking.

It’s a feeling that cannot be beaten, expressed, nor reproduced.

IMG_0719

She was kicking and screaming, but I just couldn’t help it.

IMG_0724

IMG_0725

IMG_0740

As we came back home, we decided to explore into a little cafe that we had all be itching to check out.
Passing this cute little place every morning, peering in, yet too afraid to experience it.

IMG_0749

IMG_0752

It surpassed our expectations to say the least.

IMG_0771

On our final day we planned to relax, and we did just that.
Yet we had to cross a something off Kimmy’s “To-Do” list as well.

Cooking class here we come!

IMG_0785

IMG_0787

IMG_0794

IMG_0799

IMG_0802

IMG_0803

I enjoyed a 5 course lunch all made by myself.

IMG_0805

IMG_0813

Surprisingly my mother struggled, while the two children excelled. Quite a change, as my mom is quite the cook at home.
A nice change to say the least.
After a ling day of learning, cooking, and eating, I had to venture back to the cafe I loved so dearly.

IMG_0821

Throughout my whole trip in Thailand, my one wish has been to spend a day relaxing in a hammock under the sweet Thai sun.
Well it was just my day to do it.

IMG_0824

After relaxing on the hammock, I stumbled back to the “hotel” and crashed for the night.
We woke and were on the road again.
This time to the good ol’ BKK.

Similar to all other travel experiences in Thailand, we found ourselves in the middle of nowhere, jumping into a strange persons car.

Never fear though. As I have not been stranded once.

IMG_0826

We returned safe and sound, just a bit tired.

After a long day of shopping at the weekend market, I decided to take my family to one of my favorite places to eat good old Thai Street food.
Steamed fish and Curry is a must.

IMG_0828

IMG_0831

And today.
Thought we tried to get an early start to our day of sightseeing, we have found ourselves just enjoying each others’ company with a cup of coffee in hand.

IMG_0834

IMG_0840

IMG_0849

IMG_0851

I guess there’s a lot to see, and a lot to show them, but for me, I’d rather just sit here.
Sitting in my little get-away. Enjoying the sounds, conversations, and little things that make traveling so wonderful.

Sunday Funday

24 Dec

It’s been a busy last week. Friends have come. And friends have gone. For when we will meet again, we are unsure.
So for the last week or so I have been doing my best to simply live life. Away from the computer. Away from the blog. Just enjoying everything and everyone as much as possible.

It’s been almost a week now since I last wrote so I feel as if the time has come to give you all a little update.
Its Christmas Eve today. As Christmas has come, I have found myself alone in Bangkok. People headed home. People gone to vacation in far away islands.
It’s ok though, as Bangkok is where my heart lies.

“Sunday Funday” is a little something we used to do back at home every weekend. As Sunday comes around. We all would drop anything we had to do, and spend our Sundays just relaxing with friends. Having a day of relaxation and spontaneous fun.
It had been a while since I had last had a Sunday Funday, so I decided it was time to introduce it to my good friend Axle.

So we headed to Lumpini Park. The epicenter of chill in Bangkok.

On our way though we decided to grab some sweets.
First up was a couple of milk teas. Delicious.
As we walked passed the McDonald’s I couldn’t help but be drawn towards it.
9 baht for a cone??
Why not?

BKK 293

I felt like a little kid again.

We grabbed some books, some postcards, and kicked back in the grass.

BKK 295

Sitting on the grass amongst families and people enjoying thier sunday along the lake with the city all around us.
How can you not love the city.
BKK 300

As I sat back and read my book I was greeted by a little friend.

BKK 301

I’m not sure what it is, but dogs here seem to be drawn to me.
Maybe it’s the long hair.

As I continued reading, Axle popped in his iPod and took a little nap.
Before he knew it, we woke up to my new friend licking his face.

BKK 303

Out in the distance we saw a crowd gathering round.
We inched up closer to see what all the fuss was about. Ended up being a free concert.
Full orchestra, and 2 opera singers.
Amazing to say the least.

So we spent our Evening eating popcorn in the grass listeing to the sweet sounds of the Thai equivalents of  Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.

BKK 305

After an hour or 2 the concert was done, but our Sunday was not.
We went for a quick bite to eat, then decided to to head to the Saxophone Pub for some more live music.

An all girl band was rockin’ the night away.

What a Funday it was.

Sometimes the most simple days can be among the best.

Axle and I had quite the week together.

More on our adventures to come!

Saturday Satisfaction

20 Nov

I woke this morning with a soreness I haven’t felt in a long time.
I mean sure, I have woke up sore numerous times over the last month, mostly from the aches and pains from my accident, but today is different.
Today I am sore from, EXERCISE.

It’s funny. You don’t understand how important physical activity is in your life, until you are deprived of it. After my accident, I was unable to really do anything that involved strain of the body. No more gym, no basketball, no sports, no…nothing.
But yesterday that all changed.

..

Before I continue on about my amazing Saturday, I should give a little recap on whats been going on, and why there have been no posts in such a long time.
Well, this week proved to be one of the most hectic weeks I have had in Thailand.
School is wrapping up (only 2 more weeks), and  all my classes had final projects due.
So in between school, rest, and life, I have had almost no time to take a single picture and post it up.
The week has consisted of many trips to coffee shops, and lots of caffeine.

IMG_8715

I spent one night at Coffee Society, working until 2 AM. It may be more expensive than most, but open 24 hours, and free, fast wifi.

The thing I love about Bangkok, is that you could have your face stuck behind a screen until 2 AM, and still come out to the most lively streets.

IMG_8716

The rest of my days this week have consisted of many things that have sparked my interest, but those will be expanded upon within the next couple of days.

So yesterday as we all woke up after a long night of celebration, we came together to have a Saturday afternoon in the sun.
Today was going to be my day to experience real Football.

We headed to Chula, and got ready to find a field to play

IMG_8719

IMG_8722

IMG_8723

IMG_8725

Finding a field proved to be much more difficult than expected, but in the end we found what we needed.

IMG_8728

As always Lucas cannot help but pose for the camera.

IMG_8730

And Kevin is caught in his naturalness.

IMG_8752

IMG_8755

IMG_8761

IMG_8763

IMG_8775

The ultimate goal keeper.

IMG_8777

I ended up just holding down the goal most of the games, but goalie is a position that I enjoyed playing.

We played game after game under the hot sun. I have to say that it was an amazing feeling to be back on my feet running around.
Being away from it, made me appreciate it even more. Lazy to take pictures as I just wanted to keep on enjoying myself out on the field.

On our way home, Kevin made a monumental suggestion.
Look for the post, as we had a magical meal in Bangkok.

Laos Lovin

20 Oct

Spent at least 16 hours traveling but now we are in paradise.

Laos is possibly one of the most beautiful places I have been as of yet.

Let the fun begin!

Hangin’ with Royalty

14 Oct

Its already Friday night, and I feel like the whole week just wizzed past me without me even knowing it.
Life’s been busy. Not too busy, but busy enough to keep me occupied.

I woke up early yesterday morning. As I sat at the table, finishing up the last touches to my latest video, the phone rang.

“Darius?… Want to go to the Grand Palace today?”
I thought about it for a second, “Uhh, Sure! I don’t have anything better to do!”

So with that being said I got dressed and headed down to the lobby.
We walked out, by 8:30 AM. I was still exhausted from the night before, so we all grabbed Thai coffees to go.

IMG_7224

Thais love to put drinks in bags. It is the weirdest and most ingenious idea ever. You can walk with it. You can throw it over your shoulder. You can hang it off your handle bars. Best of all it keeps your hand free!
I have only ever seen other people with them. Even when I tried to get a drink in a bag, or get a handle around my drink, it never worked out. It’s a “Thai thing”.
But finally I had made it into the club!

IMG_7229

We were off.
After a taxi ride, we were there. We walked up and then were told it was closed.
AGAIN!? This would be the second time I would have been failed. We walked down a little and found that it was wrong. It was open.
We went in, and entered the Royal Palace.

IMG_7232

The Girls had to cover their legs.

IMG_7235

IMG_7237

The palace was amazing. Beautiful buildings all around us.

IMG_7243

Everything that looks “gold” is real gold. Even paintings on the walls were plastered with gold.

IMG_7244

IMG_7246

IMG_7249

Rob pointed out this girl who he thought was quite the “cutie”.

IMG_7250

Touch ups.

IMG_7254

IMG_7257

The girls were looking quite dapper with their skirts.

IMG_7259

This picture would set up the premise of the rest of the day.

IMG_7261

The sky looked amazing behind the beautiful architecture.

IMG_7264

IMG_7266

While I stared at the man’s camera setup, Rob went for some water.

IMG_7271

IMG_7277

IMG_7278

We couldn’t help but take pictures with the Thai guard. Just like in England, he wouldn’t budge a smile.

IMG_7287

IMG_7289

IMG_7290

IMG_7292

IMG_7294

IMG_7303

IMG_7306

IMG_7314

Unbrealla pictures!

IMG_7317

As we left, the girls indulged on a fresh coconut.

IMG_7318

We headed into the official King Rama VI Chulalongkorn museum.

This sweet hole in the wall would dispense postcards with every 10 baht you stuck in.

IMG_7324

I got very excited.

IMG_7333

The gift shop had even more postcards. I got very excited. I think I bought enough postcards to last a little while.

We headed back into the streets to find some grub.

IMG_7336

Found a little place to sit down and eat.

IMG_7340

We walked and we walked, until we found ourselves at the river.

IMG_7341

The weather was quite amazing, considering we are all preparing for a flood.

IMG_7345

IMG_7346

We explored around our rival school, Tomasat.

IMG_7349

Then me and Rob became Thai dancers.

IMG_7353

The girl at the desk decided to join Rob.

IMG_7358

We crossed a bridge.

IMG_7359

IMG_7361

IMG_7367

He was so happy.

A little glimpse into the realities of the times in Bangkok. Flooding all around us.
Its only a matter of time until it hits us as well. We are all crossing our fingers, and hope for the best.

IMG_7394

After that, we headed to the infamous Kao San Road.

IMG_7401

Experienced some sweet day shopping, and some weird backpackers.

This Thai salesman was quite awesome though.

IMG_7399

All in all, it was an awesome day.
Did more touristy stuff than I fell I had done since my stay, but it was quite fun.
I need to do more of it from now on.

Kim convinced me that I needed to have more pictures of myself during my journey.
She said my mom would be happy to see me. Lets hope so!

Pattaya Pleasure

13 Aug

It was a normal Friday morning. I sat in front of my computer writing, blogging, and thinking about where the day would take me.

My roommate Emerick was gone, and Kevin was sleep.  I was antsy to get out, and  I craved a day to myself.

I decided to head out alone.Packed an extra shirt, shorts, and headed out. Just me, my backpack, and public transportation

I headed to the main bus station where I found a ticket to Pattaya beach, 2 hour bus ride, for only 113 Baht ($3.75).

Why not?

IMG_3105

IMG_3107

A long ride on the bus allowed me to see areas not yet seen. Being constantly around the city, I had almost forgotten how beautiful of a place Thailand is.IMG_3119

As I arrived I was ready to head to the beach. I had decided I was not going to stop  until I saw the sweet sands of Thailand.

That quickly failed as I came across my first vegetarian restaurant.

IMG_3121

IMG_3123

Spicy “duck” curry with Pineapples, grapes, and a side of Brown rice. Nothing short of perfection.

A scooter and food stand all in one is not at all unusual in Thailand.

IMG_3130

Finnally I had arrived at the beach
IMG_3134

IMG_3141

Clear waters with temperatures that would make you feel as if you were taking a bath are abundant in Thailand.

IMG_3143

IMG_3160

IMG_3166

IMG_3176

IMG_3165

Although the water felt great, the influx of tourists and corporations has led to the detriment of these beaches.
IMG_3142

IMG_3146

IMG_3168

IMG_3182

Drinking out of a freshly cut coconut on a beach in Thailand is quite a feeling.

IMG_3185

It was the Queens birthday, and the streets were filled with people and a parade in honor.

IMG_3203

IMG_3201

Possibly the coolest Bus I have seen to date. I have come to the conclusion that my next car will be a bus.

IMG_3210

Pattaya beach turned out to be quite beautiful.

Long time, old friend

8 Jun

Its been a long while since I have last posted.

Things have changed, but mostly everything is the same.

I have officially bought my ticket to Thailand. So I will be leaving on the 2nd of August.

I still have tons that I need to take care of before I leave.

Still need to send my Visa information.

Still need to get shots and vaccinations.

Lots to do. Little time.

I will be starting my internship at KPMG soon. (On Thursday)  So no more “summer vacaction” but I have enjoyed these couple of weeks off.

I came to realize tonight that although people tend to screw you, take advantage of you, and just plain old do you  wrong; nothing beats being around people.

Hanging out with a group of friends, not doing too much other than standing around talking and laughing amongst ourselves is an unbeatable feeling.

I think my bad luck for this week is starting to change.
